Itchy hands and feet after a C-section: what to know

The timing and pattern matter. Itching that began soon after spinal or epidural medicines, or after opioid pain relief, can be a medicine effect. Itching focused on the palms and soles, especially without a visible rash, can also occur with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and may continue around the time of birth. A clinician can decide whether blood tests or another examination is needed.

Postoperative itching may be caused by an opioid used during or after the operation. Dry skin, sweating, adhesive products, antiseptic solution, or a new soap can cause surface irritation, often with redness or a rash. Hives, facial swelling, wheezing, or sudden widespread itching can signal an allergic reaction.

Itching from cholestasis often affects the palms and soles and may be worse at night. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusually pale stools makes liver-related assessment more urgent. Itching does not by itself show which cause is present.

Contact your maternity team or doctor if the itching is persistent, worsening, mainly on your palms or soles, or disturbing sleep. Tell them when it started, whether there is a rash, and every medicine, supplement, skin product, or dressing used since the operation. Do not stop prescribed medicines without checking first.

Until you are assessed, use cool or lukewarm water, an unperfumed moisturiser, loose cotton clothing, and short fingernails. Avoid hot showers, fragranced products, and scratching. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or other treatment is suitable while breastfeeding.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Contact urgent maternity care for severe itching with yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, right-upper-abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement if you are still pregnant.

Ask: Could a medicine or skin product be causing this? Do I need liver or bile-acid blood tests? What symptoms should make me seek emergency care? Which itch-relief products are compatible with breastfeeding? If the itching began during pregnancy, ask whether follow-up is needed after birth.

Bring a list of medicines and note whether the itch is worse at night, has a rash, or is associated with urine, stool, or eye-colour changes.
