Short answer

Itchy feet and lower legs can result from dry skin, contact irritation, eczema, infection, or an underlying nerve or circulation problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Look for
Scaling, blisters, cracks, redness, swelling, warmth, and changes in sensation.
Protect skin
Moisturise after washing and avoid scratching, heat, and fragranced products.

Reading the pattern

The distribution and appearance matter. Scaling, peeling, or cracks between the toes can occur with Athlete's Foot. A rash matching a sock, shoe, lotion, or detergent exposure may fit Contact Dermatitis. Small itchy blisters on the feet can occur with Dyshidrotic Eczema. Dry, flaky shins often need a different approach from an infected toe-web rash.

When the skin looks normal, itch can sometimes reflect nerve irritation, medication effects, or circulation changes. One-sided swelling, warmth, pain, or colour change is more concerning than a mild symmetrical itch and should be assessed rather than managed only with moisturiser.

What may help

Wash with lukewarm water, use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and moisturise while the skin is still slightly damp. Wear breathable footwear, change damp socks, and avoid scratching or fragranced products. Photograph a changing rash and note new shoes, creams, medicines, or activities.

A clinician or pharmacist can help distinguish fungal infection from eczema or irritation. Ask before using a steroid or antifungal product; Topical Antifungal Treatment is useful only when the diagnosis supports it, and a mixed rash may worsen with the wrong product.

When to seek care

Arrange a review if itching persists, spreads above the ankles, keeps returning, breaks the skin, or interferes with sleep. Seek prompt care for a hot painful leg, sudden one-sided swelling, pus, red streaks, fever, a new ulcer, or significant numbness. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which visible features identify the cause, whether circulation or nerve symptoms need checking, whether a skin scraping is useful, and which treatment is safe with your current medicines.

Questions people ask

Can dry skin cause itching on the feet and lower legs?

Yes. Dryness can irritate the skin, especially after hot washing, but a persistent or changing rash needs assessment.

When is itchy swelling urgent?

Sudden one-sided swelling with warmth or pain, or swelling with breathlessness, needs prompt medical care.
