Itchy eyes from a cat: what to know

Pet allergens can cling to fur, skin flakes, clothing, and household surfaces. A person with Pet Allergy may develop itching, watering, redness, or nasal symptoms after being near a cat, even when the cat is not in the room. Cat exposure can also carry dust or other irritants. The timing of symptoms, whether they recur with exposure, and whether both eyes are affected provide useful clues; they do not prove the cause.

Avoid rubbing your eyes and wash your hands after touching the cat or its belongings. Keep the animal away from your face and bedroom, and change clothes if symptoms follow close contact. Wipe surfaces and ventilate rooms; ask another person to handle grooming or cleaning if possible. Cool compresses may soothe itching. Arrange medical advice if symptoms recur around cats, continue after exposure ends, or interfere with sleep or routine. Remove contact lenses when the eye is uncomfortable and seek prompt advice if pain or blurred vision develops.
