What should you know about itchy eyes and ears?

Allergens can affect the eye lining and the skin around the ear at the same time. Allergic conjunctivitis may cause watery, red, itchy eyes; allergic rhinitis may add sneezing and nasal irritation. Pet dander and house dust mites can trigger symptoms indoors. Ear itching may also come from dry skin, eczema, ear-canal irritation or frequent use of earbuds, so it should not automatically be attributed to allergy.

Pain, reduced hearing, fluid, a blocked sensation or discharge changes the picture. These features can point to a problem in the ear canal or middle ear and are better assessed than treated by repeated scratching.

Keep fingers, cotton buds and other objects out of the ear canal. Clean only the outer ear gently, and pause earbuds or headphones if they rub the skin. For the eyes, avoid rubbing and use a cool compress over closed lids. Wash hands after handling pets and reduce dust where you sleep.

A pharmacist or clinician can discuss Allergy Medication if the pattern is seasonal or linked to a clear trigger. Use products only as directed, especially around the eyes and ears, and do not put eye drops or household liquids into the ear.

Seek advice when ear itching lasts, keeps returning, or occurs with pain, discharge, swelling, hearing change or fever. Arrange urgent care for severe eye pain, sudden vision change, major swelling, breathing difficulty or an injury. Eye symptoms with strong light sensitivity also warrant prompt assessment.

Ask whether the ear skin or canal looks irritated, whether allergy is a reasonable explanation for both areas, and which products are safe for your eyes and ears. Mention any new shampoo, cosmetics, earphones, drops or pet exposure.
