Itchy eye discharge: what to know

Allergic Conjunctivitis often causes itching, watering, redness, and stringy or clear discharge in both eyes, sometimes with sneezing or a blocked nose. Conjunctivitis can also cause redness and discharge; the eye may feel gritty, and the lids can stick together after sleep. A clinician may need to assess whether the cause is allergic, infectious, irritant-related, or linked to the eyelid or tear drainage system.

Do not judge the cause from colour alone. Note whether symptoms started after dust, cosmetics, swimming, a respiratory illness, or contact with someone who has eye redness. Eye Discharge that is thick, persistent, or associated with discomfort deserves medical advice, especially in a contact-lens wearer.

Wash hands before and after touching the eyes. Gently clean crusting with clean water and a fresh clean pad for each eye; do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops. Stop using eye makeup until the eyes are comfortable, and avoid rubbing. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether lubricating or allergy treatment is appropriate. Do not use leftover antibiotic drops, because the wrong treatment can delay correct care or irritate the eye.

Seek urgent assessment for moderate or severe eye pain, new blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, injury, a chemical splash, marked swelling around the eye, or a feeling that something is embedded. Contact a clinician promptly if discharge is heavy, symptoms are worsening, one eye is very painful, or a baby has a red eye with discharge. Emergency help is needed if swelling affects breathing or follows a suspected severe allergy.
