Itchy Bumps on Skin Like Mosquito Bites

Raised patches that come and go or change location can fit hives. Dry, cracked, or inflamed skin may suggest eczema, while a rash limited to an area touched by a new product, plant, metal, or fabric may suggest contact dermatitis. Severe night-time itching, tiny bumps between fingers or around the waist, or itching in close contacts can occur with scabies. Moist, warm skin folds with redness may support a yeast infection. Psoriasis or lichen planus can also produce itchy raised lesions.

A photograph, exposure history, and examination are often more useful than the bite-like shape alone.

Use cool compresses, a bland moisturiser, and gentle fragrance-free cleansing. Keep nails short and avoid scratching, hot showers, and newly started skin products. Wash clothing and bedding normally if an exposure or infestation is suspected, but do not use insecticides or prescription creams without advice. A clinician or pharmacist can match treatment to the pattern; steroid, antihistamine, antifungal, or scabies treatment is not interchangeable.

Get medical advice if the rash keeps spreading, returns repeatedly, disrupts sleep, becomes painful, or develops warmth, pus, or crusting. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. A rapidly worsening rash with fever also needs prompt assessment.

Ask what the distribution and timing suggest, whether a contact or household exposure matters, which over-the-counter product is appropriate, and what warning signs should prompt reassessment. Bring a list of new medicines, foods, detergents, cosmetics, and travel or animal exposures.
