Itchy blurry eyes: what to know

Allergic conjunctivitis often causes itching, watering, redness, and puffy eyelids; allergic rhinitis may appear at the same time with sneezing or a runny nose. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are possible triggers. Dryness, screen strain, wind, smoke, cosmetics, or a contact lens can also make the eyes feel gritty and temporarily blur vision. Blurring that clears after blinking may reflect an unstable tear film, while persistent blurring, marked redness, light sensitivity, or discharge suggests a need for assessment. Do not assume that itching alone identifies the cause.

Stop wearing contact lenses until the eye feels normal and use glasses instead. Do not rub the eyes; a cool clean compress can ease itching and swelling. Wash hands, remove eye makeup, and reduce exposure to smoke, dust, pets, or other suspected triggers. Take screen breaks and keep fluids available. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on allergy medication or lubricating drops; avoid sharing eye drops and do not use someone else’s prescription.

Seek urgent eye care for sudden vision loss or marked blurring, severe pain, injury, a chemical splash, strong light sensitivity, halos, or a very red eye with headache or vomiting. Get prompt advice if a contact-lens wearer has pain, redness, or worsening vision. Arrange assessment when symptoms persist, recur often, or include thick discharge.
