Itchy Back After C-Section: What to Know

Pregnancy hormones can leave skin drier or more sensitive, while sweating, adhesive dressings, antiseptic and hospital bedding may irritate it. A rash that appears in stretched skin can be pregnancy-related. Itching without a visible rash may come from dryness or nerve sensitivity as tissues recover. It is not a typical sign that the operation has failed. Severe itching with a rash on the palms or soles, yellowing skin or dark urine needs prompt clinical advice because liver and pregnancy-related conditions must be considered.

Use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser and lukewarm water. Pat skin dry, wear soft loose clothing and keep the room cool. Avoid scratching, hot showers, new fragranced products and applying creams over a wound or dressing unless instructed. Record when the itching started, where it is, whether a rash is present and which medicines or products you used. Contact your maternity team promptly if itching is intense, widespread, worse at night, or accompanied by a rash on your hands or feet, abdominal pain, vomiting, pale stools, dark urine or yellow eyes. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fever, severe headache, vision changes, or a wound that is increasingly red, hot or draining. Ask whether the pattern suggests dry skin, contact irritation, a pregnancy-related rash, medicine sensitivity or a liver problem; whether tests are needed; and which moisturiser or medicine is suitable during breastfeeding. Tell them about anaesthesia, antibiotics, pain relief, dressings and any new laundry products. Ask what changes should trigger an urgent call.
