The short answer

Itchy and smelly feet commonly result from trapped moisture, fungal infection, or irritated skin between and around the toes. Odour can develop when sweat mixes with bacteria on the skin, while itching may come from inflammation or a fungal rash.

What the combination may mean

Athlete's foot can cause scaling, peeling, cracking, or burning, especially between the toes. Contact dermatitis may follow a reaction to footwear, detergent, or a product and often leaves red, tender, or itchy skin. Small deep blisters on the sides of the feet can occur with dyshidrotic eczema. These patterns overlap, so odour alone cannot identify the cause.

Look for damp skin, softened areas between the toes, blisters, flakes, open cracks, or a rash extending onto the sole. A clinician can examine the distribution and choose treatment suited to the cause.

Steps that can help

Wash the feet gently and dry carefully between every toe. Change socks when damp, rotate shoes, and let footwear air fully before wearing it again. Avoid scratching, harsh scrubbing, and sharing towels or shoes. If a fungal rash is suspected, discuss an appropriate topical antifungal treatment and follow its directions; stopping as soon as itching settles can allow the rash to return.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if the skin is painful, rapidly worsening, warm, swollen, draining, or deeply cracked, or if walking becomes difficult. Seek prompt care for fever, spreading redness, or feeling unwell. A foot problem also deserves earlier assessment if you have diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system.

Questions for your doctor

Could this pattern fit Athlete's Foot, Contact Dermatitis, or Dyshidrotic Eczema? Should I use a topical antifungal treatment, and for how long? What should I do about cracked skin or recurrent odour?

Questions people ask

Does foot odour always mean infection?

No. Odour may come from sweat and bacteria even without a fungal rash, although itching and peeling warrant attention.

Can I scratch itchy feet?

Try not to. Scratching can break the skin and make irritation or infection harder to settle.
