Itching Under the Groin: Causes and Care

A moist, red, tender rash may occur with Skin Yeast Infection, especially where skin touches skin. A reaction after a product or hair removal may fit Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis can also involve folds, while Scabies may cause intense night-time itch with symptoms in other areas. Hives usually appear as raised areas that come and go. Painful blisters, sores, discharge, or a strong change in smell need an examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Rinse gently, pat the area dry, and change out of damp underwear or exercise clothes. Choose loose, breathable underwear and avoid fragranced washes, deodorants, harsh antiseptics, and scratching. Pause a new product until the skin settles. Keep towels personal and avoid applying steroid or antifungal treatment to genital skin unless a clinician or pharmacist confirms the product and area are appropriate.

Book an assessment if the itch persists, returns, spreads, affects the vulva or penis, or comes with scaling, cracks, sores, discharge, or urinary discomfort. Seek urgent care for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, skin breakdown, or facial swelling and breathing difficulty. A clinician may need to inspect the rash and consider infection, dermatitis, or another cause.

Ask whether the rash is in a skin fold or on genital skin, whether testing is needed, and which treatment is safe with pregnancy, diabetes, allergies, or current medicines. Mention recent sexual contact, shaving, products, antibiotics, and whether anyone close to you is itchy.
