Itching soles of feet during pregnancy

Short answer
Itchy soles during pregnancy can follow dry or irritated skin, but persistent palm or sole itching should be reported promptly.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Do not ignore
- Persistent itching on the soles, especially without a rash
- Skin care
- Gentle washing, careful drying, breathable footwear, and plain moisturiser
What may be behind it
Sweat, heat, tight footwear, dry skin, and a reaction to soap or fabric can irritate the feet. Look for scaling, cracks, redness, blisters, or a clear exposure that might suggest dermatitis or another skin condition. A skin appearance can guide assessment, but it does not explain every pregnancy-related itch.
Intense itching of the soles, with or without itching elsewhere, can occur with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. It often has no primary rash, so do not dismiss it because the skin looks normal. Your maternity clinician may arrange blood tests to investigate.
What may help
Wash gently, dry carefully between the toes, use a fragrance-free moisturiser on dry areas, and choose loose breathable socks and shoes. Avoid hot foot soaks and scratching. Photograph any rash and write down when the itching worsens. Do not use medicated creams or oral remedies in pregnancy without professional advice.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly if the itch is persistent, severe, worse at night, or also affects the palms. Report yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, unusual abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement urgently. Breathing difficulty or sudden swelling of the face or mouth requires emergency help.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms warrant bile-acid and liver testing, whether the foot skin needs examination for dermatitis or infection, which moisturiser is suitable, and how to monitor fetal movement.

Questions people ask
Does an itchy sole always mean a liver problem?
No. Irritation and dryness can itch, but persistent palm-or-sole itching in pregnancy should still be assessed.
Should I scratch the area to check it?
Avoid scratching, which can break the skin; inspect gently and record any visible changes for your clinician.
