Itching Palms: What to Know

Cracks, scaling, soreness, or tiny blisters can occur with hand eczema or irritation from soaps, sanitisers, gloves, cleaning products, or frequent washing. A rash that follows a new product may be contact dermatitis. Raised welts that move or fade may be hives. Itch with peeling between the fingers or on the feet may need assessment for infection. Palm itch without an obvious rash can have causes beyond the skin, so persistence matters.

Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and a thick bland moisturiser after washing. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with a soft layer underneath if sweating causes irritation. Avoid scratching, harsh scrubs, and fragranced hand products. Note whether work, jewellery, food handling, or a new medicine changes the symptoms. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on treatment after seeing the rash.

Get urgent help if palm itching occurs with swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, faintness, or widespread hives. Seek medical care for severe pain, warmth, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or loss of movement. Book a review if cracks bleed, sleep is disturbed, both palms itch without a rash, or symptoms do not improve after avoiding clear irritants.
