Itching outside the pubic area: what to know

The external skin can react to shaving, waxing, sweat, pads, condoms, lubricants, fragranced wash or laundry products. Eczema causes itch and irritation; yeast may cause a moist, red rash in skin folds. Scabies can cause marked nighttime itch and may affect household contacts. Lichen planus, psoriasis and other conditions can cause persistent colour or texture change. Vaginal discharge, burning when urinating, sores, blisters or pelvic pain may indicate a problem needing clinical assessment rather than skin care alone.

Rinse the external skin with water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry and wear loose cotton underwear. Stop shaving and fragranced products until the skin settles. Avoid douching, deodorant sprays, harsh antiseptics and scratching. Do not use leftover antibiotics or steroid-antifungal mixtures without advice, because they can mask the pattern. Book an examination if itch lasts, returns, spreads, or follows a new sexual contact, or if there is discharge, odour, pain, a lump, sores, blisters, bleeding or skin thickening. Seek urgent care for severe swelling, fever, rapidly spreading redness, inability to pass urine or severe pelvic pain.
