What should you know about itching near pubic hair?

Shaving, waxing, close trimming, friction, sweat, and fragranced products can inflame hair-bearing skin. Small itchy bumps after hair removal may reflect irritation or ingrown hairs, while a rash matching the area of product contact suggests contact dermatitis. Dry, scaly patches can occur with eczema or psoriasis. Moist groin folds may develop a yeast rash, often with redness and soreness. Scabies can produce severe night-time itching and may cause itchy spots elsewhere on the body or in close contacts.

Look for clues without picking at the skin: bumps around hairs, a defined edge, scaling, cracks, blisters, or weeping. Pubic-hair itch can also coexist with genital symptoms, so discharge, sores, pain when urinating, or pain during sex should be discussed with a clinician.

Stop hair removal until the skin is calm. Rinse gently, pat dry, and avoid scrubs, alcohol-based products, perfumes, and tight clothing. Keep the area cool and dry, and use a clean cool compress for short periods. Do not squeeze bumps or share towels, underwear, or bedding if scabies is possible. Avoid borrowing medicated creams; a steroid can mask some infections, while an antifungal will not treat every itchy rash.
