Itching in throat and sneezing: what to know

Allergic rhinitis can cause repeated sneezing, an itchy nose or eyes, clear nasal discharge and throat irritation. House dust mite allergy may be worse in bedrooms or while cleaning, whereas pet allergy may flare around an animal or in rooms where it has been. A common cold more often brings a sore throat, blocked nose, cough or feeling unwell, and symptoms can change over several days. The same symptom can have different causes, so timing, exposures and associated symptoms are useful clues rather than proof of a diagnosis.

Limit contact with a suspected trigger and wash your face or change clothes after outdoor exposure. Keep bedroom fabrics clean according to their care instructions, and reduce dust without stirring it into the air. Saline nasal spray or rinse may ease nasal irritation when used correctly. Warm fluids can soothe the throat. A pharmacist can explain whether allergy medication is suitable for you, including any cautions with pregnancy, other medicines or medical conditions. Avoid using decongestant sprays longer than the label advises.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, wheezing, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, particularly after food, medicine or an insect sting. Arrange a review if symptoms repeatedly disturb sleep, limit daily activities, cause persistent fever, or do not improve as expected. A clinician can examine the nose and throat and help distinguish allergy from infection or another airway problem.
