What should you know about itching in stomach during 9th month of pregnancy?

As the abdomen expands, skin can feel tight, dry, and itchy around stretch marks. Fragrance, sweat, new laundry products, or tight clothing can add irritation. Red or inflamed patches may fit Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis. Hives can appear as raised, transient itchy areas. Itch that is severe, widespread, or concentrated on the palms and soles can have causes that require assessment during pregnancy; it should not be self-diagnosed from the rash alone.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing, wear loose cotton clothing, and keep showers lukewarm rather than hot. Press or gently tap itchy skin instead of scratching, and keep nails short. Record when the itch occurs, where it spreads, whether a rash is present, and any new products. Check every cream, antihistamine, or medicated treatment with the maternity team before use, especially near delivery.

Contact your maternity team promptly for intense or widespread itching, itch without a visible rash, involvement of the palms or soles, dark urine, pale stools, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or marked tiredness. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a rapidly spreading rash, fever, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, fluid loss, or reduced fetal movement. A clinician can decide whether examination and blood tests are needed.

Ask whether the pattern fits stretching, Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, or Hives; whether pregnancy-related testing is needed; and which moisturiser or medicine is appropriate before delivery.
