Itching in the Last Month of Pregnancy: What to Know

Dryness, stretching, heat, or a new product can irritate skin during late pregnancy. Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, hives, psoriasis, or yeast infection can also occur while pregnant. Itching without an obvious rash, especially on the palms or soles and worse at night, can signal a pregnancy-related liver problem that requires maternity assessment. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause, so its location, rash, timing, and associated symptoms matter.

Tell your maternity team about new or persistent itching rather than starting an oral medicine on your own. Use lukewarm showers, fragrance-free moisturiser, loose cotton clothing, and cool compresses. Keep nails short and avoid scratching. Note whether the itch is generalised, concentrated on the palms or soles, worse at night, or accompanied by a rash, dark urine, pale stools, yellowing skin, or reduced fetal movement.

Contact your maternity team promptly for itching without a rash, palm or sole involvement, night-time worsening, or symptoms such as yellowing skin or unusual urine or stool colour. Seek urgent maternity help for reduced fetal movement, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, severe headache with visual changes, breathing difficulty, or facial swelling. A rash with fever or rapidly worsening swelling also needs timely review.
