Itching in the 3rd trimester: what to know

Short answer
Itching in the third trimester can be harmless, but new widespread or palm-and-sole itching needs prompt maternity advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean
As the abdomen grows, stretched, dry skin can itch. Eczema, contact dermatitis, hives, or another skin condition may also explain a rash or irritation; see [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) and [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/).
Intense itching without much of a rash, especially on the palms or soles and worse at night, can be associated with a pregnancy-related bile-flow problem. This cannot be diagnosed from the itch alone, so a maternity clinician may check your symptoms and blood tests.
What you can do now
Use a fragrance-free moisturiser after a lukewarm wash, wear loose cotton clothing, and keep nails short. A cool compress may calm a hot or itchy area. Avoid starting oral medicines, herbal products, or medicated creams without checking their pregnancy suitability.
Tell your maternity team when the itching began, where it is strongest, whether a rash is present, and whether it disturbs sleep. Keep track of any change in fetal movement according to the plan your maternity team gave you.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly for new severe itching, itching on the palms or soles, itch that is widespread or keeps you awake, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or reduced fetal movement. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be a pregnancy-related liver problem, and do I need blood tests? Which moisturiser or medicine is suitable at this stage? What changes in fetal movement or skin symptoms should prompt urgent contact?

Questions people ask
Can itching in late pregnancy be normal?
Mild itch from dry or stretched skin can occur, but new widespread or palm-and-sole itching should be discussed promptly.
Can I use an anti-itch medicine while pregnant?
Check with your maternity clinician or pharmacist first because suitability depends on the product, dose, and your pregnancy.
