Itching Hands: Common Causes and What to Do

Itching hands is often related to dryness or contact irritation, but the pattern, rash, and exposures help identify when assessment is needed. Frequent handwashing, sanitiser, cleaning products, gloves, metals, and occupational wet work can weaken the skin barrier and trigger inflammation.

Dryness with cracking commonly follows repeated washing or low humidity. Red, scaly, burning skin may fit contact dermatitis or eczema. Small intensely itchy blisters on the palms or sides of fingers can occur with some forms of hand eczema. Thick plaques may occur with psoriasis, and itch involving the finger webs or household contacts warrants assessment for scabies. The appearance and history matter more than itch alone.

Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and a thick plain moisturiser after washing. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with a soft breathable layer underneath if tolerated, and remove rings before washing if moisture collects beneath them. Do not burst blisters or apply multiple new creams without guidance. Keep a note of work tasks and products that make symptoms flare.

Arrange an appointment if cracking, blistering, bleeding, pain, or itch continues despite careful protection, or if symptoms interfere with work or sleep. Prompt care is needed for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or marked swelling. Sudden hand swelling with breathing trouble or facial swelling requires emergency help.

Ask whether this resembles hand eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, or scabies; whether workplace exposures should be changed; and how to protect open cracks while using the recommended treatment.
