What should you know about itching fingers?

Frequent handwashing, detergents, solvents, gloves, rings, and nail products can damage the skin barrier or trigger Contact Dermatitis. Dryness and cracking may occur with Asteatotic Eczema or Atopic Dermatitis. Tiny intensely itchy blisters on the sides of fingers can occur with hand eczema. Psoriasis, Lichen Planus, Hives, Scabies, and Skin Yeast Infection may look different and need different treatment.

Record whether the itch is on the palms, finger sides, around the nails, or in the web spaces. Note new products, work exposures, jewellery, household contacts with itching, and whether washing makes symptoms worse.

Use lukewarm water and a gentle fragrance-free cleanser. Apply a plain moisturiser after washing and keep a small tube available at work or home. Wear suitable protective gloves for wet tasks, with cotton liners if gloves cause sweating, and remove rings before washing. Avoid picking blisters or peeling skin. If a product caused the flare, stop it and keep its packaging for review. Do not use a prescription cream from someone else.

Seek prompt assessment for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, pus, warmth, red streaks, fever, or difficulty bending a finger. Get urgent help after a sudden reaction with facial swelling or breathing trouble. Arrange a routine review when cracks bleed, nail changes appear, several household members itch, or symptoms keep returning despite barrier care.

Ask whether the pattern suggests contact allergy, hand eczema, infection, or Scabies, and whether patch testing or another test would help. Discuss workplace protection and the safest treatment for skin around the nails.
