Itching Before Labor: What to Know

As the abdomen and breasts stretch, dry or sensitive skin can itch. Heat, sweat, new products, and eczema can also cause a visible rash. Itching without an obvious rash, especially on the palms or soles or across the body, should be reported promptly to the maternity team because pregnancy-related causes can require blood tests and monitoring. Itching itself does not predict when labor will begin.

Note whether the itch is local or widespread, whether it is worse at night, and whether you have a rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain, reduced fetal movement, bleeding, fluid leakage, or regular painful contractions.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser, take lukewarm rather than hot showers, wear loose cotton clothing, and keep the room cool. Avoid new herbal remedies or medicines during pregnancy unless your maternity clinician recommends them. Contact your maternity team the same day for new widespread itching, palm or sole itching, or itch that is disrupting sleep, even if the skin looks normal.

Seek urgent maternity advice for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, severe abdominal pain, severe headache, vision changes, or regular painful contractions. Get prompt assessment for widespread itch without a rash, yellow skin or eyes, or marked darkening of urine. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or collapse. A clinician may check your skin, pregnancy symptoms, and liver-related blood tests.
