What should you know about itching all over body during third trimester?

As the abdomen and breasts enlarge, stretched dry skin may itch, and heat can intensify discomfort. Pregnancy-related skin disorders may produce an obvious rash. Itching on the palms or soles, itching that is stronger at night, or widespread itching with little or no rash can signal a liver-related pregnancy condition that requires testing and monitoring. Your maternity team may ask about stool colour, urine colour, jaundice, and fetal movement. Itching is also a presentation of Hodgkin Lymphoma, but this symptom does not show that a pregnant person has cancer. Vulvar Cancer is linked with persistent vulvar symptoms rather than generalized late-pregnancy itch.

Contact your obstetric or midwifery team promptly and describe when the itch began, where it is worst, whether a rash is present, and how sleep is affected. Use unperfumed moisturiser, lukewarm water, loose breathable clothing, and a cool room. Do not start an oral antihistamine, steroid cream, herbal product, or other medicine without checking its pregnancy suitability. Keep track of fetal movements according to the plan given by your maternity team.

Seek urgent maternity advice if itching is severe, affects the palms or soles, is worse overnight, or has no visible rash. Contact maternity services immediately for reduced fetal movement, yellowing of the skin or eyes, very dark urine, pale stools, facial swelling with headache or visual symptoms, bleeding, or severe abdominal pain. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these signs occur.
