What should you know about itching all over the body after a C-section?

Itching may follow pain relief or anaesthetic medicines, adhesive dressings, antiseptic products, dry skin, or an allergic reaction. It may also come from stretching skin or healing around the incision, although an itch across the whole body deserves a broader review. A clinician will ask when it started, which medicines were used, whether there is a rash, and whether symptoms involve the eyes, urine, or abdomen.

Pregnancy-related liver or skin conditions can sometimes continue or appear around the postpartum period. Itching does not by itself indicate cancer. Conditions such as Hodgkin Lymphoma or Vulvar Cancer have specific clinical contexts and cannot be diagnosed from this symptom alone.

Contact your maternity, obstetric, or primary-care team if the itching is widespread, persistent, or interfering with sleep. Use unperfumed moisturiser, gentle products, loose clothing, and cool compresses. Note every medicine and supplement taken since the operation, including pain relief and antibiotics, and do not stop a prescribed medicine without clinical advice.

Check the incision for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, or separation. Keep it clean and dry according to the discharge instructions. Ask before taking an oral antihistamine or applying a medicated cream, especially if breastfeeding or taking other medicines.

Call emergency services for itching with facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or widespread blistering. Seek same-day medical assessment for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe right-sided upper abdominal pain, fever, or a rapidly spreading rash. Contact the surgical team promptly for severe incision pain, pus, spreading redness, wound opening, or feeling acutely unwell.
