What should you know about itching after period ends?

Pads, liners, tampons, menstrual cups, wipes, detergents, sweat, and prolonged dampness can irritate vulvar or nearby skin. Symptoms that appear after a particular product and improve when it is stopped suggest contact irritation, although timing cannot establish a diagnosis.

A rash, scaling, small cracks, swelling, or burning may occur with dermatitis, eczema, yeast infection, psoriasis, lichen planus, hives, or another vulvar condition. Itching with unusual discharge, odour, sores, pelvic pain, or pain when urinating needs a healthcare assessment.

Wash the external area with lukewarm water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Avoid douching, scented wipes, deodorant sprays, fragranced pads, and tight clothing. Change out of damp underwear and choose breathable fabric. Do not scratch or apply leftover creams inside the vagina.

If symptoms follow a new menstrual product, stop that product and note the brand and material for your clinician. Avoid repeatedly treating presumed yeast infection without advice, because similar itching can have different causes.

Book an appointment if itch returns after several cycles, lasts beyond the period, affects sleep, or comes with discharge, odour, sores, swelling, bleeding outside the expected period, or pain. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, fever with worsening symptoms, facial swelling, or trouble breathing.

Tell the clinician where the itch is, whether it is external or internal, when it starts in relation to bleeding, and which products you use. Ask whether the skin needs examination or a swab, and which cleanser or treatment is appropriate for the diagnosed cause.
