Itch in my throat makes me cough: what to know

A blocked or runny nose can let mucus drip towards the throat and set off a tickle. Allergic rhinitis may cause an itchy nose, sneezing and clear drainage. A common cold or acute bronchitis can inflame the airways, while asthma may cause cough, wheeze or chest tightness. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, especially after meals or when lying down. Bronchiectasis may produce a long-lasting cough with phlegm. The symptom alone does not identify one cause.

Sip water regularly and try warm fluids to soothe the throat. Avoid smoke, strong fragrances and very dry air. If nasal drainage is present, saline rinsing may help when done with safe, prepared water and clean equipment. Notice whether symptoms follow dust, pets, meals, exercise or lying down. Rest while you have cold symptoms, and avoid sharing cups or close contact when an infection seems possible. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment if allergy, reflux or asthma is suspected; do not start another person’s inhaler or prescription.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat. Arrange a medical review if the cough is worsening, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, comes with wheezing or fever, or continues beyond the expected course of a simple cold. A clinician may listen to your chest, examine your nose and throat, and ask about triggers, medicines and reflux symptoms.
