Possible explanations

Bleeding between periods can occur with ovulation, contraception changes, missed doses or irritation after sex. Take a list of medicines and contraception, and mention pregnancy possibility. An assessment may include a pregnancy test, examination, infection testing or imaging depending on your history. Avoid changing prescribed contraception without advice.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fever, shoulder pain, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Emergency care is needed if you feel weak, confused, breathless or unable to stand. These warning signs can indicate significant blood loss, infection or a pregnancy complication.
