Is wound suturing done with surgical sutures?

Surgical sutures are medical threads used to hold wound edges together while tissue heals. A clinician chooses material, thickness, and technique based on the wound's depth, tension, location, contamination, and the layer being repaired. Some sutures are removed later; others are designed to break down inside the body.

Not every wound should be closed immediately. The wound may need cleaning, removal of damaged tissue, assessment of tendons or nerves, or a different dressing approach first. The timing of closure can affect the plan.

Follow the instructions for washing, covering, activity, and review. Keep the area protected from pulling and unnecessary friction. Do not cut, tug, or remove stitches yourself, and do not apply antiseptics or creams unless advised. Attend the planned appointment if the material needs removal or the wound needs checking.

Protect the repair from soaking until you have been told it is safe. If a dressing becomes wet or dirty, replace it using the recommended method or contact the treating service for advice.

Seek prompt care if the wound opens, bleeding continues, pain suddenly increases, or the stitches cut into the skin. Get medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, loss of feeling, or difficulty moving the nearby body part.

Ask which suture material is being used, whether it will dissolve or need removal, how to keep the wound protected, and which activities to avoid. Confirm the follow-up date and the signs of infection or wound separation to watch for.
