Short answer

Wound suturing is often done with lidocaine local anaesthetic to numb the skin before stitches are placed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Temporarily numb the skin before stitches
During injection
A brief sting or pressure may occur

How numbing works

Lidocaine is injected into the skin around the wound. It temporarily blocks pain signals from the treated area, allowing a clinician to clean, examine, and close the wound while you remain awake. You may feel a brief sting or pressure during the injection, followed by numbness.

The clinician checks that the area is numb before suturing. The amount and technique depend on the wound's size, location, depth, and your medical history. Tell them about previous reactions to local anaesthetics, medicines, allergies, pregnancy, or circulation problems.

What to do around the procedure

Keep still while the anaesthetic is injected and while the wound is repaired. Do not test the area with sharp objects while it is numb. Protect it from heat, pressure, and accidental knocks until normal feeling returns, and follow the instructions for cleaning and dressing the wound.

Ask when you can wash the area, how to manage discomfort after the numbness fades, and when stitches need review or removal. Take only recommended pain relief, particularly if you have other medical conditions.

When to seek care

Tell the clinician immediately if you develop widespread itching, facial or throat swelling, trouble breathing, severe dizziness, or feeling faint after the injection. Seek review if numbness persists longer than expected, the wound becomes increasingly painful, or redness, swelling, pus, or fever develops.

Questions for your doctor

Ask why lidocaine is suitable for your wound, what sensation to expect, how long numbness may last, and which symptoms after the procedure need urgent help. Confirm the wound-care plan and follow-up time.
