Is vertebroplasty done with bone cement?

During vertebroplasty, a clinician guides a needle through the skin into the affected vertebra, usually with imaging assistance. The cement is placed in a controlled way and hardens inside the vertebral body. The aim is to support the weakened structure and reduce pain linked to movement of a compression fracture. It does not rebuild the whole spine or treat every cause of back pain.

The procedure may be considered when a vertebral fracture remains painful despite initial care. Suitability depends on the fracture pattern, symptoms, general health, and imaging findings.

Ask which medicines to pause, whether you need to avoid food before the procedure, and how you should arrange transport home. Follow the post-procedure guidance about walking, lifting, wound care, and returning to normal activity. Report new symptoms rather than changing medication or activity on your own.
