Is vaginal delivery done with oxytocin?

Vaginal delivery can happen without oxytocin, but oxytocin may be given to start labour or strengthen contractions when clinically appropriate. It does not determine whether birth will be vaginal. The decision depends on how labour is progressing, your health, and your baby's condition.

Oxytocin is a hormone your body releases during labour. A manufactured form can be given through a drip into a vein. Clinicians may recommend it when labour needs to be started, when contractions are not opening the cervix as expected, or when contractions need support after the waters have broken.

The medicine can make contractions stronger, closer together, or both, so the maternity team usually checks your contractions and your baby's heart rate while it is running. The dose can be adjusted or stopped if the pattern of contractions or monitoring becomes concerning. Receiving oxytocin does not mean a caesarean birth is planned; the intended route may remain vaginal while labour is assessed.

Ask why oxytocin is being suggested and what change the team expects it to make. Ask how your contractions and your baby's heart rate will be monitored, whether you can move or change position, and what other options are available. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous births, and any concerns about pain relief.

If oxytocin is started, let your midwife or doctor know about severe or unusual pain, dizziness, breathlessness, or a sudden change in how you feel. Follow the local maternity team's instructions about eating, drinking, movement, and monitoring because these depend on your individual situation.

During labour, call the maternity team promptly for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe constant abdominal pain between contractions, fainting, trouble breathing, or a marked reduction in your baby's movements. If you are at home and think labour has started, use the pregnancy or maternity instructions given to you, especially if your waters break or the fluid is green, brown, or bloody.

After birth, seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, or a severe headache with vision changes. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether oxytocin was used.
