Is uterine artery embolisation done with MRI-guided focused ultrasound?

Uterine artery embolisation blocks selected blood vessels supplying fibroids. A clinician guides a thin catheter through an artery, commonly from the wrist or groin, and releases small particles to reduce blood flow to the fibroids. MRI-guided focused ultrasound uses focused sound waves directed at selected fibroid tissue while MRI helps map the target and monitor treatment. It does not use a catheter to place particles in the uterine arteries. Both approaches require assessment of fibroid location, size, symptoms, reproductive plans and other health factors.

Ask the treating team to name the exact procedure, explain which imaging guides it and describe what happens before, during and after treatment. Bring details of heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, pain, previous procedures, medicines and plans for pregnancy. After either procedure, contact the treating service for fever, increasing pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, shortness of breath or a wound that becomes red, swollen or increasingly painful. After embolisation, cramping and a period of feeling unwell may occur as the fibroid responds, but severe or worsening symptoms need review.
