Is stopping your period bad?

Short answer
Stopping your period is not automatically harmful, but an unexplained absence or a sudden change should be assessed, especially if pregnancy is possible.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible explanation
- Pregnancy, hormonal treatment, menopause, illness, and health conditions can all affect periods.
- Useful record
- Write down the last period, usual cycle pattern, medicines, and accompanying symptoms.
Why periods may stop
Periods can stop during pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, or after starting some hormonal treatments. They may also change with major weight loss, intense exercise, emotional stress, or an illness. Health conditions such as [Menopause](/conditions/menopause/), [Polycystic Ovary Syndrome](/conditions/polycystic-ovary-syndrome/), [Premature Ovarian Insufficiency](/conditions/premature-ovarian-insufficiency/), and [Turner Syndrome](/conditions/turner-syndrome/) can affect ovulation and menstrual bleeding.
The absence of bleeding does not by itself show whether ovulation is occurring. The meaning depends on age, pregnancy possibility, medicines, symptoms, and whether periods were previously regular.
What to do next
If pregnancy is possible, use a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and arrange follow-up if the result is negative but periods remain absent. Note the date of the last bleed, recent cycle pattern, medicines, changes in weight or exercise, and symptoms such as acne, increased facial hair, hot flushes, headaches, or breast discharge. A clinician may use this history and targeted tests to look for hormonal, ovarian, thyroid, or other causes.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment for unexplained absent periods, repeated missed cycles, or a new pattern that persists. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Questions for your doctor
Could pregnancy, a medicine, or a hormonal condition explain this change? Do I need testing for thyroid or ovarian function? When should I expect bleeding to return, and what symptoms should prompt urgent care?
