Is splinting done with thermoplastic splint material?

A clinician warms a sheet of thermoplastic so it becomes formable, then shapes it over or around the hand, wrist, finger, arm or another body area. Once it cools, it holds the intended contour. Straps, padding and edges are adjusted to spread pressure and keep the splint in position.

The design may protect a healing injury, limit a specific movement, rest an irritated joint or help maintain a useful position. Thermoplastic is not suitable for every situation, and the thickness, shape and wearing schedule depend on the diagnosis, swelling, skin condition and required movement.

Follow the prescribed wearing schedule and keep the splint clean and dry as instructed. Check the skin when removing it, especially over bony areas and under straps. Tell the clinician if the splint rubs, becomes loose, traps moisture, causes tingling or changes the colour or temperature of the fingers or toes. Do not reshape it with household heat, since this can alter the support and injure skin.

Remove the splint if instructed for an emergency and seek prompt care for severe swelling, blue or unusually pale digits, increasing numbness, inability to move a previously mobile digit, severe pressure pain or skin breakdown. After an injury, worsening deformity or uncontrolled bleeding also needs urgent assessment.
