Is spinal fusion safe for medical tourists?

Travel adds practical considerations to any major spine operation. The team needs your imaging, medical history, medicines, allergies, previous operations and information about nicotine use or conditions that may affect healing. You also need enough time at the destination for early review and a safe travel plan after surgery.

Ask how the hospital handles infection prevention, anaesthesia, implant documentation, urgent complications and communication after discharge. Find out who will review the wound, who will answer questions outside clinic hours and which local clinician can take over care when you return home. A remote consultation alone cannot replace an examination and review of current imaging.

Send complete records in advance and request a written treatment plan. Confirm the planned procedure, implants, expected restrictions, accommodation needs, transport arrangements and follow-up schedule. Arrange a companion if movement will be limited. Carry a discharge summary, implant details, medicine list and contact numbers when travelling home. Do not book a return journey until the surgeon confirms that travel is suitable.

During recovery, obtain urgent assessment for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with wound changes, increasing drainage, one-sided calf swelling or sudden shortness of breath. If symptoms develop after returning home, use local emergency services and tell them that you recently had spinal surgery.
