Is a skin graft needed before fractional laser treatment?

Fractional laser treatment creates controlled microscopic treatment zones in selected areas of skin to address concerns such as texture, certain scars or uneven tone. It is planned for skin that has an intact barrier and can recover from the laser exposure.

A skin graft is a surgical procedure that places skin over an area where the surface has been lost or cannot close adequately. It may be considered for a wound, burn or major defect, but it is not a standard preparatory step for fractional laser treatment. Laser work may be discussed later for a healed graft or scar, depending on its maturity and the clinical goal.

Have the clinician examine the area and explain whether the problem is an active wound, a healed scar, pigment change or another condition. Share previous grafts or surgery, a history of raised scars, cold sores, inflammatory skin disease, medicines that affect healing, and any recent infection.

Delay treatment over open, crusted, draining or actively inflamed skin until the cause has been assessed and the surface is stable. Follow instructions about sun exposure, skincare and medicines, and ask whether a test area is appropriate for your skin tone and treatment goal.

Seek medical advice before laser treatment if the area is painful, warm, increasingly red, swollen, leaking fluid or failing to heal. After treatment, contact the clinic for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, blistering or a delayed healing response.
