Is skin biopsy needed before skin cancer surgery?

A biopsy removes a small sample from a suspicious area for examination. The result can clarify whether cancer is present, which type it is, and features that affect the surgical approach. The sample may be taken from part of the lesion or may remove a small lesion in full. In selected cases, a surgeon may plan removal and diagnostic assessment as part of the same procedure; the care team explains the sequence.

Bring information about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, previous reactions to local anaesthetic, and conditions that influence wound healing. Ask how the biopsy site should be cared for, when results are expected, and whether surgery will be arranged after the report. Keep the area protected and do not apply unapproved products to the wound.

After a biopsy, contact the clinic for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, fever, or worsening pain. Seek prompt assessment for a lesion that changes quickly, bleeds repeatedly, or forms a sore, even if a previous visual assessment was reassuring.

Ask whether a biopsy is recommended before surgery, what type of sample is planned, how the result changes the surgical margins or method, and whether the procedure will leave a scar. Confirm how results will be communicated and which wound changes need review.
