Is shingles safe in older adults?

Shingles is a reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox. It often produces burning, tingling, or pain followed by a one-sided stripe of blisters. Older adults may have stronger nerve pain or pain that continues after the skin settles. Rash near the eye or ear can threaten vision, hearing, or facial movement, so its location matters as much as its appearance.

Call a clinician as soon as a one-sided painful rash or unexplained nerve pain appears. Keep the rash clean and covered, avoid scratching, and wash hands after touching it. Avoid close contact with people who have not had chickenpox or vaccination, pregnant people, and anyone with weakened immunity until the blisters have crusted. Do not share towels or clothing.

Seek urgent care for a rash around the eye or ear, vision change, severe headache, confusion, facial weakness, widespread blisters, or rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly even with a smaller rash because antiviral treatment is time-sensitive and pain control may need adjustment for other medicines or kidney problems.
