Is a second opinion done with digital pathology?

Digital pathology turns a glass tissue slide into a high-resolution image that can be viewed on a secure computer system. A second pathologist can examine the tumour's cell pattern, tissue arrangement, margins, and selected features without having the original slide physically in front of them. The review may confirm the first diagnosis or identify a different interpretation that changes staging or treatment discussions.

The scan is only one part of the record. The reviewing specialist may also need the original pathology report, clinical history, imaging, previous treatment details, and special stains or molecular test results. Some cases still require the original glass slides or additional laboratory work.

Ask your current hospital which materials can be released: digital images, glass slides, tissue blocks, reports, and test results. Confirm that the receiving specialist accepts the image format and that the files will be transferred through a secure channel. Make a list of the diagnosis you were given, the treatment proposed, and the specific question you want answered.

Do not delay urgent treatment decisions while arranging a review; ask the treating team how much time is reasonable. A second opinion is most useful when the reviewer has enough clinical context to interpret the tissue accurately.

Contact your oncology team promptly if a pathology review changes the diagnosis, stage, or recommended treatment, so the plan can be explained clearly. Seek urgent care for new severe symptoms such as breathing difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, confusion, or sudden weakness; a pathology review does not replace assessment of an acute problem.
