Is scoliosis bracing done with thermoplastic splint material?

Thermoplastic is a mouldable material that can be warmed and shaped around the torso. Once it cools, it forms a supportive shell intended to apply corrective pressure at selected areas while leaving room for breathing and movement. A brace may include padding, straps, hinges, or other components. The shell is normally fitted to the person's measurements rather than selected as a one-size device.

The choice of material is only one part of bracing. The curve pattern, growth stage, skin comfort, activity needs, and prescribed wearing schedule also affect the final design. A brace does not straighten every curve in the same way, and its purpose should be explained by the treating team.

Ask the orthotist what material and brace pattern are planned, where the corrective pads will sit, and how the fit will be checked as the child grows. Follow the wearing schedule supplied by the clinical team, keep the skin clean and dry, and report rubbing or pressure marks that do not settle after the brace is removed. Do not reshape, trim, or heat the shell at home.

Contact the brace team promptly if there is persistent skin breakdown, numbness, new weakness, worsening pain, breathing difficulty, or a brace that suddenly feels too tight. Seek urgent medical help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe weakness, or rapidly increasing back pain.
