Is sclerotherapy done with sclerosant solution?

A clinician first assesses the vein and chooses an appropriate injection site. The sclerosant irritates the inner lining of the treated vessel, encouraging its walls to come together. Blood then uses healthier nearby pathways, while the treated vein becomes less visible over time. The solution may be delivered as a liquid or, for some veins, as foam; the choice depends on the vessel and the clinician’s technique.

Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, pregnancy, previous clotting problems, and any history of vein disease. Follow instructions about skin products and clothing, and bring a list of regular medicines. After treatment, follow the advised walking, compression, and wound-care plan. Avoid rubbing injection sites unless specifically instructed, because the skin may be temporarily irritated or bruised.

Contact the treating clinic if redness spreads, pain becomes marked, swelling keeps increasing, or an injection site develops drainage. Seek urgent medical help for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, or new one-sided leg swelling and pain. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine follow-up.

Ask which vein is being treated, whether liquid or foam is planned, how many visits may be considered, what compression is recommended, and which changes should prompt a call. Also ask how existing medicines or a past history of clots affect the plan.
