Is scar revision surgery done with silicone gel sheet?

Scar revision surgery is a procedure that reshapes, removes, or repositions scar tissue to improve the scar’s appearance or function. A silicone gel sheet is placed on the skin rather than used to perform the operation. After surgery, a clinician may recommend silicone once the wound is closed and suitable for contact. Silicone can help keep a healing scar covered and hydrated, but it does not replace surgical planning and cannot correct every type of tethered, raised, widened, or contracted scar.

Ask the surgeon whether revision is appropriate, what change is realistic, and when silicone can be started. Do not put a sheet over an open wound, drainage, infection, or an unhealed incision. When approved, apply it to clean, dry skin and follow the instructions for wearing, cleaning, and replacing it. Stop and seek advice if the skin becomes increasingly itchy, blistered, raw, or inflamed. Protect the healing area from unnecessary friction and follow wound-care instructions first.

Contact the surgical team for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, separation of the wound edges, pus, fever, or bleeding that does not settle. Seek advice if a silicone sheet causes a persistent rash or if the scar becomes rapidly thicker, more painful, or increasingly tight. These changes may require assessment before scar products are continued.
