Is scalp ringworm safe in children?

Scalp ringworm is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair shafts. Children may develop scaly patches, broken hairs, itching, tenderness, or areas where hair looks thinner. Without treatment, inflammation can become more severe and may leave scarring hair loss. The infection can spread through close contact or shared items such as combs, hats, pillows, and towels, so a child’s diagnosis affects household hygiene and sometimes school or activity planning.

Arrange a medical assessment rather than relying on an over-the-counter skin cream. The clinician may prescribe an oral antifungal medicine and recommend a medicated shampoo to reduce spread; use both exactly as directed and complete the course. Do not share brushes, hats, helmets, towels, or pillow coverings. Wash or clean items that touch the scalp, check close contacts for symptoms, and avoid shaving the scalp unless a clinician advises it.

Arrange prompt assessment for a child with patchy hair loss, broken hairs, painful swelling, pus, thick crusting, or swollen neck glands. Urgent review is warranted when the scalp becomes very tender, soft, or rapidly inflamed, or when the child is feverish or unwell. Early treatment helps limit inflammation and reduce the chance of lasting follicle damage.

Ask whether the scalp findings need testing, which oral medicine and shampoo are appropriate, when the child can return to normal activities, and whether family members should be checked.
