Is sacrocolpopexy done with surgical mesh?

Sacrocolpopexy is a prolapse repair. The surgeon places mesh between the vagina or cervix and the sacrum, then fixes it so the supported tissue is held in a more normal position. The operation may be performed through keyhole incisions or through an open incision. Mesh used for this operation is different from mesh placed through the vagina for some other prolapse procedures; its position and purpose should be explained before consent.

Ask the surgeon why sacrocolpopexy is being recommended, whether mesh is planned, where it will be placed and what alternatives could suit your prolapse. Discuss effects on bladder, bowel, sexual function and future pregnancy plans. Bring a list of medicines and previous operations, and read the consent information in enough time to ask about recovery, activity restrictions and follow-up.

Contact the surgical team for worsening pain, fever, heavy bleeding, difficulty passing urine, persistent vomiting or a wound that becomes red or opens. Seek urgent care for chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, severe abdominal pain or heavy bleeding. Later, report new vaginal bleeding, unusual discharge, pelvic pain, painful sex or bowel or bladder changes, because these symptoms need assessment rather than self-treatment.

Ask what the mesh supports, how it is fixed, what non-mesh alternatives exist, which complications matter for you, how long recovery may take, and who will review new symptoms.
