Is PRP injection done with point-of-care ultrasound?

Point-of-care ultrasound provides live images of structures beneath the skin, including tendons, muscles, joints and fluid-filled areas. During a PRP procedure, the clinician may use the probe to identify the intended tissue, plan the needle path and watch the needle approach the target. This can be particularly useful when the treatment area is deep, small or close to other structures. Ultrasound guidance is not automatically required for every injection, and the method depends on the diagnosis, site and clinician’s assessment.

Bring information about your symptoms, previous imaging, medicines and any blood-clotting condition. Ask whether the injection will be ultrasound-guided, what the clinician will look for on the scan, and whether the imaging changes the planned target. During the procedure, report sharp or spreading pain, tingling, dizziness or feeling faint. Afterward, follow the instructions for activity, dressing care and rehabilitation, because accurate placement does not remove the need for gradual recovery.

Seek advice if the injection site develops increasing redness, warmth, drainage, swelling or pain that does not settle as expected. Get urgent help for fainting that does not quickly resolve, breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe allergic symptoms, or new weakness or numbness. A persistent change in movement also deserves review by the treating clinician.

Ask whether ultrasound guidance is recommended for your target, what structures are being avoided, and how the clinician will confirm the intended location. Ask about alternatives, aftercare, rehabilitation and the symptoms that should prompt an earlier review.
