Is PRP for hair loss done with platelet-rich plasma?

Blood contains fluid, red cells, white cells, and platelets. During PRP preparation, a clinician processes a blood sample to concentrate the platelet-containing portion and separates it from other components. The resulting liquid is then used during scalp injections. It is not a synthetic filler or a donor transplant.

PRP is one treatment option, rather than a diagnosis. Hair shedding or thinning can have several causes, so the clinician may ask about its timing, inspect the scalp, and consider other treatments or tests before recommending injections.

Tell the clinician about blood disorders, medicines that affect clotting, scalp inflammation, allergies, and recent procedures. Ask how the sample is handled, what areas will be treated, how many visits may be considered, and what improvement can reasonably be assessed. Follow the clinic's instructions about washing the scalp and medicines.

Mild tenderness or temporary redness can occur after injections. Contact the treating clinic if pain, redness, warmth, drainage, or swelling continues to intensify. Urgent assessment is appropriate for breathing difficulty, widespread hives, marked facial swelling, or feeling faint.
