Is progestogen-only pill safe while breastfeeding?

The progestogen-only pill contains a progestogen and does not contain oestrogen. It can be considered after birth while breastfeeding, although the suitable start time depends on the product, your medical history and whether there are concerns after delivery. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Bleeding may become lighter, irregular or absent, and those changes do not by themselves show whether breastfeeding is affected.

Tell the prescriber when you gave birth, whether you are exclusively breastfeeding, and whether you have had bleeding, illness or complications. Confirm when to start, when contraceptive protection begins and what to do if a tablet is late or missed. Take it on schedule and check before using medicines or herbal products that could interfere. If milk supply or the baby's feeding changes after starting, contact a healthcare professional for advice.

Seek medical advice if you have persistent heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fever, a positive pregnancy test or concern about pregnancy. Get urgent help for sudden chest pain, trouble breathing, severe headache, one-sided weakness or fainting. Contact the baby's clinician if the baby is feeding poorly, seems unusually sleepy or has fewer wet nappies.
