Is osteotomy done with plate and screws?

During an osteotomy, the surgeon makes a controlled cut in a bone and changes its alignment or shape. A plate sits along the bone and screws hold the plate and bone in the intended position while healing takes place. The exact arrangement varies: some procedures close a carefully created gap, while others open a gap that may need additional support. A brace, cast, or temporary wires may also be used. Fixation is selected for the body region, bone quality, correction size, activity needs, and the surgeon’s assessment of stability.

Before surgery, ask how much weight you may place through the limb, how long you may need crutches, and when physiotherapy begins. Arrange a safe route at home, a suitable chair, and help with tasks that require stairs or carrying objects. After surgery, protect the incision, follow the weight-bearing instructions, and complete the prescribed exercises without forcing painful movement. Attend imaging and review appointments so alignment and healing can be checked. Plates and screws may remain in place; removal is considered only when there is a specific clinical reason.

Contact the surgical team for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, wound opening, fever, or pain that is worsening rather than settling. New calf swelling or pain, sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, a cold or pale foot, new numbness, or inability to move the limb needs urgent assessment. A fall, new deformity, or unexpected loss of weight-bearing ability should also be reported promptly, because the fixation may need checking.

Ask which fixation will be used and why, whether the plate and screws can be felt under the skin, and whether removal is ever considered. Clarify weight-bearing limits, wound care, driving, work, physiotherapy, follow-up imaging, and symptoms that should trigger an urgent call.
