Is MMR vaccination done with a live attenuated vaccine?

Live attenuated viruses have been weakened so they can stimulate immune memory without behaving like the disease-causing viruses in most people with a healthy immune system. The vaccine presents all three targets in one preparation. Your immune system can then recognise measles, mumps and rubella more quickly if you encounter them later.

Because it is a live vaccine, it is not suitable for everyone. Pregnancy and some conditions or medicines that weaken immunity can change the advice. A previous severe allergic reaction to a vaccine ingredient also needs discussion before vaccination.

Tell the vaccinator about pregnancy, immune-system problems, regular medicines, allergies and any recent vaccine. Bring your vaccination record if available, because the recommended schedule depends on age, previous doses and local guidance.

After the injection, mild fever, a sore arm or a temporary rash can occur. Rest, drink fluids and follow the clinician’s instructions. Do not delay urgent care for a severe reaction such as breathing difficulty or swelling of the face.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, widespread hives, fainting, marked facial swelling or a rapidly worsening reaction after vaccination. Contact a clinician for persistent high fever, unusual drowsiness, a seizure or symptoms that concern you. These events need assessment rather than being assumed to be a routine vaccine response.
