Is meniscus repair done with a suture anchor?

A suture anchor is a small implant that helps hold strong surgical thread in tissue or near bone. The thread can be passed through the meniscus and tied or secured to bring the torn edges together. This supports the tissue while the body heals the repair.

Not every meniscus tear needs an anchor. The surgeon selects an all-inside device, a suture-based technique, an anchor, or another method according to the tear’s location, shape, access, and the strength of the remaining tissue. The device is only one part of the repair plan.

Ask before surgery whether an anchor is planned, what material it is made from, and whether it is intended to remain in place. After repair, protect the knee according to the instructions for weight-bearing, bending, bracing, and exercises. Early rehabilitation may focus on safe movement and swelling control before heavier strengthening.

Avoid twisting, deep squats, jumping, or loaded knee flexion until your clinician says those movements are appropriate. Returning too quickly can place stress on the healing repair even when the incision looks settled.

Report increasing warmth, redness, drainage, fever, worsening swelling, or pain that is not settling as expected. Get urgent medical help for severe calf pain or swelling, chest pain, major breathing difficulty, or a leg that becomes suddenly pale, cold, or numb.
