Is mammogram safe for women who prefer a female clinician?

A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays to create images of breast tissue. A trained radiographer positions each breast between two plates and applies firm pressure briefly so the images are clear. Pressure can feel uncomfortable, especially if your breasts are tender, but tell the radiographer if you need a pause or repositioning. The examination does not involve an injection or a cut. Radiation exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable, while the benefit of finding a concerning change early is considered alongside the small exposure.

When arranging the appointment, say that you would feel more comfortable with a female clinician and ask whether a female radiographer can perform the examination. You may also ask about a chaperone, changing arrangements, and whether someone can accompany you. Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top. Avoid deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion on the breast and underarm area on the day because these can appear on the images. Tell the team if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have breast implants.

Contact a clinician promptly for a new breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, a nipple that turns inward newly, or a persistent change in breast shape. These symptoms need clinical assessment whether or not a mammogram is already scheduled. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden chest pain after any healthcare visit.
